Road Construction

The county road that goes by our house is getting redone this summer. First they ground-up the blacktop and we have had to drive on that for a month or so now. But this last week they added some gravel to the top and seem to be getting it ready for new blacktop.  So this week when the dump trucks were dumping gravel right in front of our house my little brothers, (sometimes joined by others) had fun watching. Since there is quite a steep bank going down to the road from our yard it’s a perfect place to watch.

However just sitting there wasn’t fun forever and they thought of something more exciting to do. They decided to race the dump trucks. They would stand at one side of the yard and wait for a dump truck to get close. Then they would take the liberty of a “small” head start and see if they could be to the other side of the yard before the dump truck got there. The report was that they were doing okay until the drivers figured out what they were doing and would speed up when they went by our place, only to slow down after they passed! One driver was even reported to throw his head back after he had been beaten by my siblings.  I am thinking that the drivers might have enjoyed it too!

Here is a picture of the road from our driveway, the ground-up blacktop on the bottom and several inches of gravel on the top. Today they also dumped some in our driveway to make a ramp up to the road.

After watching for a while the boys left their chairs and headed for the sandbox where they put their machines to work building roads. Silas informed me that he was making “hot mix” in this picture.
