39 People Stuck in Elevator

39 people spent 2 hours in a hot stuffy elevator last Saturday, according to our staff reporter Emily. 34 members of the K----- family was celebrating a birthday and had been at IKEA in Bloomington, MN. They were leaving the store and entered the elevator to get from the second floor to the ground floor. 5 other people also were on the elevator rated for 10,000 lbs. The doors closed and they pushed the button for floor #1. The elevator started dropped a little ways and then stopped. The lights said they were still on floor 2. After a few moments it was clear that the elevator was stuck, The call button was hit and one man talked to somebody who wasn’t even in the state of MN. The store was also contacted via cell phone. Shortly after this one girl fainted and a couple other people were not feeling well. It was reported that anything that could be used for fanning was.. notebooks, and tiles out the the suspended ceiling. When 45 minutes later nothing seemed to be happening, one lady called 9-1-1. The passengers were glad that they had cell phone service. And a little while later the firemen were there. The firemen opened the door at the bottom and the people inside were able to open the doors inside so the floor of the elevator was about 6-8 inches below the ceiling down below. Then bottles of water, and cool wet rags were passed up to the people in the elevator. this also allowed some fresh cooler air to enter the elevator. The firemen tried to get the hydraulics on the elevator to release pressure so it would drop but it didn’t work. Finally, the elevator company’s technician arrived and shortly there after they were able to get to elevator to back up the second floor were the passengers were able to get off. The passengers were much relieved and glad to see the outside of the elevator walls. Those who were not feeling well were able to walk out of the elevator and thankfully no one was hurt. However these people exited the building using the steps!

Yes, it did really happen, and it was my sister who fainted…. thankfully she came to right away and is just fine. So what is the point of my story? Elevators aren’t always the fastest way up or down! :-) I could have done a lot of flights of steps in those two hours. But what an adventure. Sorry, I don’t have any pictures to document it (but my cousins do). Also tonight we got an email from my uncle who had found web links to other articles about people who had got stuck in elevators…. like we all really want to hear about elevators right now. The rest of the day was pretty fun. We ate pizza, wrote new words to the song “Home on the Range”, played games and an extreme version of “Telephone” where a uncle wrote a detailed 200 word story for us to pass along through 5 people on our team- our team did pretty well since we tried to remember the main facts since you got points for remembering names and the important facts.
